Formula and Methodology Accounting for Increase in NCAA Member Institutions

Data was adjusted using a fixed-year analysis.  We took a fixed point, the year 2000, and adjusted the other points accordingly.  We’ll use the 1981-’82 point as the example.  The formula is:

 # of male athletes in 1981    x   # of schools in 2000   =       X
                                                # of schools in 1981

                                             Or

167,055  male athletes  x   1,039 schools   = 230,811 male athletes
                                        752   schools

The resulting figure is 230,811, therefore: if there were 1039 schools in 1981 (as there were in 2000) there would have been 230,811 male athletes in the country.  Accordingly, that point was plotted.

On every graph where we accounted for the increase in schools we used the number of schools in 2000 as our fixed-year base.  In 1982-83 there were 176,822 male athletes in the country and 788 member institutions so:

176,822 male athletes  x 1039 schools   =   233, 144 male athletes
                                     788  schools

Please Note: Plot points and trend lines resulting from this analytic formula are identical to the corresponding charts in the study measuring averages (team or athlete) per school.
